Description

"The Terrorism Debate--Civil Liberties versus Security: John Yoo, Former Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legal Counsel at the U.S. Department of Justice & Professor of Law at Berkeley (GNLA)

It has been almost 10 years since the attacks of September 11th, 2001, almost 20 years since the Clinton Administration criminalized terrorist acts, and almost two years since President Obama issued his first Executive Order, which stated that the terrorist detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba would be closed within one year. Today, the facility at Guantanamo Bay remains open.

The debate about how to classify those who wish or have given us harm is one that several presidential administrations grappled with. As terrorist organizations continue to change and improve their methods of attack, the U.S. must be able to respond quickly and correctly in order to prevent further attacks from being successfully executed.

John Yoo, former Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legal Counsel at the U.S. Department of Justice, has been directly involved in those discussions and has helped change the way we interrogate terrorists and the tactics used to retrieve information from them. Yoo will discuss with us what he believes is the appropriate response to these issues, and how we can successfully fight off terrorism in the 21st Century.
