Under Bush, Petraeus served as Commanding General, Multi-National Force- Iraq (MNF-I) from January 26, 2007 to Sept. 16, 2008. He oversaw all coalition forces in Iraq. He implemented the “surge” or escalation of the war in Iraq.
In 2003 he commanded the 101st Airborne Division in the invasion of Iraq. From the invasion until 2004, his division was in charge of counterinsurgency in the area of Mosul, Iraq.
In June 2004 Petraeus became the first commander of the Multi-National Security Command Iraq where he was responsible for training and equipping the various Iraqi puppet forces.
Currently, under Obama, he is Commander, U.S. Central Command responsible for the U.S war of terror throughout the Middle East and Central Asia. He is overall in charge of the U.S. military action in over 20 countries including the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
