The Modern Art of Torture
Help greet patrons outside the Modern wing of the Art Institute with the work of Fernando Botero, artist of the
infamous Abu Grahib paintings.
Over 240 'detainees' remain in the hell of Guantanamo, without charges or trial, and
Bagram, the torture prison under US command in Afghanistan, is being expanded. Real
prosecutions are needed to prevent the continuation of these crimes.
Will people in the US remain silent in the face of what the world understands are
war crimes? The powerful paintings of scenes from Abu Ghraib by Fernando Botero
bring home the reality of what has been and continues to be done in our name.
With daily reports about new
torture memos, possible investigations and public declarations that "we don't
torture (anymore)," it's incumbent on those of us who recognize the danger of
papering over war crimes to speak out and call on the rest of the people to
repudiate torture once and for all by seeking prosecutions of the perpetrators (at
the highest levels, not just Lynndie England).
The outcry of public opinion must become a wave of resistance if ALL those who
ordered and justified these crimes are ever to be held accountable. Obama wants to
rule prosecution off the table; too many leading Democrats are themselves complicit.
On the opening day of the Modern Art Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago (which is
also Armed Forces Day), join us to manifest for an end to war and torture. Bring
signs.
