DescriptionOn January 11, 2022, the shameful prison at Guantanamo Bay will have been open for 20 years. This vigil is a call on the Biden Administration for prompt action to close it. January 11 will also be a sad memorial to the longevity of the prison, a travesty of justice where 39 Muslim men still languish, all having been tortured, many entirely innocent, and many now with serious health problems. Guantanamo remains a symbol of torture and racism, and a huge stain on our country's conscience. With its "forever prisoners" who face no criminal charges but are to be held until they die, the prison undercuts US credibility in advocating for human rights anywhere in the world. The Raleigh January 11 vigil will join those in other cities across the U.S. NCSTN is active in the national Close Guantánamo Coalition, which includes Amnesty International, the Center for Constitutional Rights, Witness against Torture, 9/11 Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, Public Citizen, CodePink, National Religious Campaign against Torture, and others. We hope to see you in Raleigh on January 11! Please bring a mask to wear. If you have a black hood, that's even better. Orange jumpsuits are also very welcome. Please come and bring family and friends! Sponors: NC Stop Torture Now; NC Council of Churches; Eisenhower Chapter 157, Veterans for Peace (list in formation) Venue
