Description
Meet at 30 Broad Street, New London, CT.
This year, President Obama will once again visit New London to deliver the graduation address at the US Coast Guard Academy. Join the Southeastern CT Peace & Justice Network as we welcome Pres. Obama to New London, and remind him that our nation is still plagued by the “giant triplets of racism, materialism and militarism.” (Martin Luther King, Jr., 4 April 1967)
We will gather at St. Francis House, 30 Broad Street, at 11:30am, and at 12:15 we will walk to the Superior Court House, 70 Huntington Street to focus on the detention of immigrants at the Mexican-US border.
The walk will continue down State Street, with a stop at the New London Police Department, 5 Gov. Winthrop Boulevard to focus on police militarization.
Returning to State Street along Eugene O’Neill Drive, we will walk to City Pier (across from Electric Boat), to bring attention to the billions spent on nuclear weapons development. The march will end at Soldiers and Sailors Monument, where we will focus on US policy of a “war on terror” that sends troops and drones that kill people of color around the world. Marchers will be accompanied by the cadence of a drum beat, and will carry banners stating “We have a choice today: nonviolent coexistence or violent co-annihilation” and “Declare eternal hostility to POVERTY, RACISM and MILITARISM.”
Organized by the Southeast Connecticut Peace & Justice Network. For more information, contact Ronna at , 860-772-8439; or Mike at , 860-574-6235.
