Former Vice President Dick Cheney is one of the most well-known cardiac patients in the world. He suffered his first heart attack in 1978 at the age of 37. In 2012, he received a heart transplant at the age of 71. In the intervening years, coronary care has undergone revolutionary changes.
The story of these changes is told in the book Heart:An American Medical Odyssey, the chronicle of Cheney’s own heart disease and the treatments he received. In it, for the first time, Cheney shares the very personal story of his health struggles. Hearttraces the history of cardiology over the past 40 years through the alternating narratives of Cheney and his longtime cardiologist Jonathan Reiner, M.D. of The George Washington University Hospital.
In their voices, readers learn about Cheney’s personal experiences, get a glimpse into the all-important doctor–patient relationship, and learn about the cutting-edge science that has radically changed the way we think about and treat cardiac disease.
Cheney and Reiner will be interviewed by award-winning presidential historian Michael Beschloss.
