Description

FIRE, DISBAR & PROSECUTE John Yoo for the War Crime of Torture!
Gather 8:30 AM
(Gates open at 9 and ceremony begins at 10)
“Guantánamo Prisoners Visiting Hour” (jumpsuits, informational displays, orange “No Torture In My Name” ribbons)

John Yoo is called a torture lawyer and a war criminal.  He took a two-year leave from teaching at UC Berkeley to work for the Bush-Cheney White House, setting up a cover of “legality” for illegal torture and wreaking legal havoc on related fronts (as in “unlimited powers of the president, “”anything is OK in wartime” etc.).  For years the fight for accountability has tackled first the Bush Regime itself, and then Obama’s plan to “look forward, not back” as the Bush war criminals walked free.  Obama has refined and expanded the Bush rendition/torture/indefinite detention system and made it his own.

This Saturday at the Commencement Ceremony for the UC Berkeley Law Class of 2013, raise your voice especially for the hunger striking prisoners at Guantánamo, now in their fourth month of a courageous and desperate fight to be seen and heard by the world.

This is a nonviolent mass protest action initiated by World Can’t Wait, and open to ALL people of conscience.  We are not protesting against the students whose graduation is a meaningful day – we are protesting the fact that their university has given them a known war criminal as a role model and mentor.  And we call on the students, alumni, faculty members, and the entire UC community to refuse to accept torturers as teachers – to refuse the complicity of silence.

Bring your signs, jumpsuits and hoods, artwork, orange armbands and orange ribbons.  Confront the UC leadership -- from the Chancellor and Regents on down to the dean of the law school -- that FOR TEN YEARS has harbored an architect of torture on its faculty, as if it’s OK that the next generation of lawyers and judges is being taught that war criminals are accepted (and highly paid) in academia.

Speak out for the Guantánamo hunger strikers, whose hunger strike is calling out to the world to see their humanity, and act on our own.  RSVP for this action by calling (415) 864-5153, or email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
