10 years ago on February 15th was the largest one-day mass outpouring of opposition to war in history, when as many as 15 million people worldwide came into the streets to oppose the Bush regime's impending attack on the people of Iraq. Two points we must contemplate and take to heart:

1. In the face of truly massive opposition, the Bush regime, basing its case on lies that much of the world recognized as such, mounted a juggernaut of war on Iraq, and repression across the world.  The opposition to the illegitimate, unjust and immoral war on Iraq was not strong enough to stop the invasion and occupation, with terrible consequences. But it was strong enough to deny the Bush regime its "coalition of the willing," leaving it to fight with a coalition of the U.K. and bribed and bullied allies.
2. A Day of the World Saying NO to War is not enough. DAYS and weeks of staying in the streets, and mass refusal to accept what the government is doing were, and are, what's needed.

Musician Sharleen Leahey wrote, "We must be clear that the wars being waged by our government are not “over” and are not going to be over unless a movement to stop them grows. We are now witnessing the prosecution of endless war. With the decrease in troops on the ground drones are being sent over a growing list of countries not even revealed to members of our Senate Intelligence Committee. These policies are killing thousands of innocent people in our name. These policies are war crimes and must be stopped."

"Bush and Chenney should have to pay for what they did.  He didn't care how many of our troops were killed and how many other wars would start up. My husband was in WW2 and our son was in Viet Nam and now they are both deceased,  Our son committed suicide, It still hurts to this day as I think about it all," wrote Lorraine Strochansky, wife and mother of two who lost their life due to the wars.

Mike Ferner, former president of Veterans for Peace, "In the face of this overwhelming, universal cry for peace, the US and UK repeatedly lied and invaded Iraq, which says all that needs saying about the supposed “democracies” we live in. Even the staid New York Times was moved to admit that “there may still be two superpowers on the planet: the United States and world public opinion.”
