The Executive Director of the Lowy Institute, Dr Michael Fullilove, today announced that former US National Security Advisor to President George W. Bush, Stephen J. Hadley, will join the Institute as its 2014 Telstra Distinguished International Fellow.
‘Mr Hadley was a key member of the Bush Administration’s national security team in the midst of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and he helped shape the Administration’s landmark initiative to develop a strategic relationship with India. More recently, he has been a prominent voice in debates about US-China relations,’ said Dr Fullilove.
‘I have no doubt that Steve will follow in the footsteps of our inaugural Distinguished International Fellow, Kurt Campbell, and make a powerful contribution to the Australian debate on the world’, he said.
Stephen Hadley said: ‘Australia is one of America's most important allies. Our two countries need a common strategic framework as we approach the challenges and opportunities arising in the Asia Pacific in the 21st century. I look forward to working with the Lowy Institute in 2014 to pursue such a strategy.’
As with the 2013 Distinguished International Fellowship, Stephen Hadley will deliver the Owen Harries Lecture while he is in Australia. The Lecture honours the enormous contribution Mr Harries, a Nonresident Fellow of the Lowy Institute, has made to the international policy debate in both Australia and the United States.
Stephen Hadley will visit Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra in late October and early November for events, meetings and media engagements.
The Lowy Institute is delighted to partner with its corporate member Telstra as sponsor of the Telstra Distinguished International Fellowship in 2014 and 2015. Telstra Chief Executive Officer David Thodey welcomed the appointment and said ‘Mr Hadley's background and recent experience in building strategic relations in Asia will mean he can make a valuable contribution to the ongoing debate about how Australia can continue to benefit from Asia's emerging economies.’
