Guantanamo Art Exhibits in NYC
10.03.2017 - 01.26.2018
Speaking Engagements

Our friends at the Center for Constitutional Rights are cosponsoring an important exhibit of Art from Guantanamo. This amazing exhibit is running from October 2nd through January 26th. It is at John Jay College, 899 Tenth Avenue.  Eight former and current detainees, including CCR clients Djamel Ameziane and Ghaleb Al-Bihani, will show select pieces of artwork at this upcoming exhibit. Over 30 works will be displayed, including drawings, paintings, and three-dimensional works crafted from the few materials permitted to detainees, including model ships made from parts of shirts, prayer caps, razors, and mops. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Starting Oct. 26 through Dec. 22, another exhibit is running further downtown at the Steven Kasher Gallery: Debi Cornwall’s first New York solo exhibition, Welcome to Camp America, Inside Guantánamo Bay, a vivid and disorienting probe into the U.S. Naval Station in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba (known as "Gitmo").   Three bodies of work portray the residential and leisure spaces of both the prisoners and the guards, juxtaposing implied comfort and forced restraint; the commodification of American military power through the prison’s gift-shop souvenirs; and an investigation of the lives after detention of 14 men once held as suspected terrorists, now cleared and living in nine countries, from Albania to Qatar.
